Nokia 3120 Classic review

Rating: 5

Nokia’s Classic range, and in particular, the Nokia 6300 and Nokia 6500, has proved popular with the punters and with good reason. These handsets embody the Finnish company’s ethos of easy-to-use, easy-on-the-eye phones that have been the bedrock of its success down the years. Its latest member of the Classic crew, the 3120, is set to continue this fine tradition.

The 3120 could actually be touted as a loose follow-up to the mid-range 3G trooper, the 6233. However, this ‘Classic’ candybar is far more streamlined and trim with a tasteful curved bottom end and very lightweight torso to slip effortlessly into the trouser pouch.

Nokia E71 review

Rating: 4.5
Nokia E71

Someone has forgotten to tell Nokia that business phones are supposed to be efficient, functional and not the least bit sexy. It’s latest handset, the Nokia E71, may flaunt a full blown QWERTY, but is so deliciously slimline and oozing lashings of style that it’s close to completely transcending it corporate rep.

And with an impressive multimedia feature-set that will make those boardroom bores choke on their spreadsheets, this Symbian Series 60 swinging E71 smartie is also one of the most successful blends of business and pleasure we’ve come across.

BlackBerry Pearl 8220 review

Rating: 3.5

Overshadowed by the hullabaloo surrounding the unveiling of BlackBerry Storm and BlackBerry Bold, the latest Pearl messenger, the 8220, almost feels like an afterthought. But CrackBerry fans not wanting to hoof around a king-size QWERTY packing smartie will definitely still want to check out RIM’s first ever ‘flip’ BlackBerry phone.

The 8220 is, essentially, the Pearl 8120 but in clamshell form. In fact, apart from a swish BlackBerry Bold-esque menu design, its feature set remains identical to its candybar cousin. This means built-in Wi-Fi takes up the connectivity slack from sluggish EDGE download speeds while multimedia moves are, unfortunately, a bit one-dimensional.

Sony Ericsson X1 Xperia review

Rating: 4
Sony Ericsson X1 Xperia

Four years ago Sony Ericsson was a smartphone big hitter but since the days of the Symbian run P910 and the P990, it been relegated to the lower leagues. Recent powerful handsets like the iPhone 3G, T-Mobile G1, BlackBerry Storm, Samsung i8510 and Nokia’s unrelenting Nseries wrecking crew have taken up the smartphone baton and then some. But not to be outclassed, Sony Ericsson has responded with the X1 Xperia. Is it a return to former glories?

The biggest surprise is seeing a Sony Ericsson handset powered by the latest Windows Mobile OS. WinMo detractors should hold fire because the manufacturer has done a sterling job of window dressing the normally clunky business focused OS with its own seven panel menu system for switching between features. It’s a vast improvement but still not as seamless as we hoped.

BlackBerry Bold review

Rating: 4
BlackBerry Bold

BlackBerry creators RIM has shown with the Pearl and Curve crew that its messaging maestros have fully embraced the multimedia smartphone revolution, despite the fact it’s still playing teensy bit catch up in the power stakes. However, its newest fruit machine, the Bold, is bursting with its most electrifying feature set yet, not to mention a swanky new design.

The full blown QWERTY keypad shows the Bold still has messaging at its core but this BlackBerry is notable for being the first to run with HSDPA download speeds. Chuck into the mix built-in Wi-Fi, onboard GPS for sat nav, a cut throat sharp half VGA screen and an integrated 3.5mm headphone jack and compared to past Berries, the Bold is a smartphone god.
