Mobile Firefox browser coming to Symbian phones in early 2009
Owners of Nokia, Samsung and Sony Ericsson phones that run on a Symbian OS should be getting a new browser in the first few months of next year. The folks behind the incredibly popular Firefox app are beavering away on a Symbian-friendly mobile version, and it should be ready by April 2009.
Dubbed “Fennec” (which is a small desert fox, fact-fans), Firefox Mobile is already available for Linux Maemo and Windows Mobile devices, albeit only in a very early unfinished alpha form. Makers Mozilla hope to have the Symbian version out in a slightly more feature-complete beta version as early as February though - a sign that they view the platform as very important.
Firefox Mobile Fennec is go!
Firefox has slowly been wrestling control of the browser market from the clutches of Internet Explorer and now it’s got its sights set on a new target - your mobile phone.
It’s been a long time coming, but Mozilla - which oversees development of the open source browser - is ready to let people in on Fennec, the project’s codename.
Firefox Mobile available next week
Just when everyone thought Microsoft had a strangle hold on the web browser market, Firefox bravely showed there was room for another player.
Now it’s set its sights on mobile phones and from next week you’ll be able to get your hands on Firefox Mobile - specifically design with the needs of users on the go in mind.
