The Android operating system is currently featured on only one handset, the T-Mobile G1, but makers Google have decided to bolster its appeal by introducing paid applications later this month.

Mid-January should see a host of premium applications appear on Android Market, the OS’s online app store. At present only free apps are available.

The search engine giant’s move into mobiles is coming to the fore with the unveiling of its very own phone application store called Android Market.

True to its name it’ll be an open market where developers will be able to make their own apps for phone toting customers to purchase.
