The Nokia N95 8GB is a mighty hard act to follow in anyone’s mobile book. Its powerful feature arsenal still towers above most of today’s smartphone competition. So is its successor, the N96, all conquering enough to trade in your Nseries powerhouse?

While its new look spec sheet undoubtedly improves upon N95 8GB, we’re still left wondering if Nokia has really pushed the envelope hard enough. Does a 16GB memory boost, slight design overhaul, added memory card slot, and a currently redundant built-in DVB-H mobile TV receiver scream essential upgrade? Not hiking the camera to a Samsung i8510-rivalling eight megapixels also feels like a missed opportunity but despite these initial misgivings, the N96 still proves to be a mobile dream machine.

Nokia is building a solid rep for turning out classy phones like the 6500 Classic and Slide that, while don’t deserve the fashion phone tag, are incredibly smart, elegant and injected with just a soupcon of premium phone DNA. Its second wave of style phones, the 6600 Duo, flaunts more of the same sophistication but with a few diverting quirks.

The petit 6600 Fold has already impressed up with its cute minimalist form and electromagnetic auto flip mechanism. So next up is its bigger bro, the 6600 Slide - an equally compact and pocketable blower but flaunting a sharper 3.2-megapixel snapper and accelerometer sensors.

About a year ago, Nokia’s GPS phone, the 6110 Navigator, ruled the road with its sharp sat nav skills. Today, with seemingly every Tom, Dick and Harry high end handset rocking up with built-in GPS and clogging up the highways, it’s lost some of its navigation lustre. So, has its successor, the 6210, got enough in its tank to reclaim pole position?

On the face of it the 6210 is nothing but a mid-level Symbian S60 smartie with a nose for sat nav. That said, it’s a big improvement on the 6110, flaunting a slicker, more attractive look and a feature boost that includes a autofocus-led 3.2-megapixel snapper, superior VGA video capturing skills, swift HSDPA download speeds, and a slightly more spacious 2.4-inch screen.

When it comes to designing all out fashion blowers, you could never accuse Nokia of holding back. Its previous eye catching Art Deco and L’Amour collections sported outrageously ornate and in some cases garish designs that appealed to a certain fun loving frou frou female fraternity. Luckily, the Finnish outfit has toned down the bling bling factor on its new Supernova quartet but cranked up the technicolour dial instead.

The first of the fab four we’ve managed to nab is the lower middle class 7310 candybar. For a funky fashionista its design is shockingly workaday only tarted up by a reflective finish and interchangeable skins. Our sample came with a bright pink and a more sedate navy covers so you can do swapsies if the mode takes you while the display turns into a mirror when powered down – perfect for the social butter to apply war paint when hotfooting between shindigs.
