Once you’ve decided a screen size, decided on whether it needs 3G or not, found a model with the perfect design and keyboard, there’s only one thing left to think about when picking your netbook – what features you’ll need. From Bluetooth to the amount of USB ports, it can be daunting for the uninitiated, but stick to our easy guide and you’ll have the perfect netbook in no time…
There are loads of factors to consider when buying your netbook, but even when you’ve decided on a particular model the features on offer should also play a part, as it could affect just what the machine is capable of.
If you intend to spend a lot of time syncing the device with your smartphone, for instance, sending photographs or other files from one to the other, then you should look for a machine with Bluetooth. This lets you send files wirelessly, and will also let you carry out other functions, depending on what your phone is capable of.

Another feature to consider is the wireless adapter. If all you use the internet for is to browse websites, then a standard 802.11b/g Wi-Fi adapter will be fine. If you plan to download lots of large files, however, then it may be worth paying slightly extra for a slightly faster 802.11n Wi-Fi adapter. It’s worth checking what type of wireless router you have, however, as you’ll also need an 802.11n router to get the best out of it.
When it comes to adding your own peripherals, you’ll usually have a choice of two or three USB ports. If you have several memory sticks, plug-in 3G dongles, or an external mouse, it’s worth going for a netbook with more ports. This doesn’t have to be a deal-breaker, however, as you can always add an external USB hub at a later date, offering more ports when you need them.
