Buy a Netbook – pick the right screen size and type

The screen is one of the components that makes the most difference to usability, especially on a machine as small as a netbook, so it’s vital that you get the right screen to suit your needs. The bigger the screen, the more space there is for a larger keyboard, but portability may be hampered as a result. Other factors include the technology used and the resolution, and both make a difference to your netbook’s capabilties. To find the best screen for your needs, read on after the jump…

The size of your netbook’s screen is directly proportional to the overall size of the machine, so it’s important that you get a screen that’s small enough to take with you wherever you go, without proving too small to work in comfort.

While first-generation netbooks came with screens that measured around 8 inches, most machines now feature displays that are a minimum of 10.1 inches. These prove much smaller than laptops to carry around, but you’ll also find the keyboards slightly more cramped as a result. As such, 10.1-inch netbooks are better suited to those with smaller hands, or for occasional use.

If you plan on using your netbook more often, then a larger screen is a good idea, as it allows more space for the keyboard, and also offers a bigger working environment. You’ll be able to choose from 10.2, 11.6 and 12-inch screens, with the latter offering a working environment that’s closer to a laptop than a netbook. As such, it’s a lot more comfortable for longer periods of use, but isn’t as small and light.

It’s not just the screen size that you need to think about, however, as the resolution also makes a big difference to what your netbook is capable of. While most previous-generation and smaller netbooks feature a resolution of 1024 x 600 pixels, more expensive options, along with 11.6-inch and 12-inch machines offer a sharper 1366 x 768-pixel resolution.

1024 x 600 is fine for basic use – you’ll be able to fit a single document onscreen, and it’s good enough to watch films. It’s a good choice for casual users on a budget. You’ll find yourself having to scroll when viewing webpages, however. 1366 x 768 pixels creates enough space onscreen to view two documents side-by-side, and also lets you fit a full webpage onscreen, so is much better for serious users.

Once you’ve picked a screen size and resolution, you’ll need to think about the technolgy used. If you can afford it, opt for a panel with LED backlighting, as this power-efficient technology results in better battery life. You’ll also have to choose between a standard TFT and Super-TFT finish. Netbooks with standard TFT screens are better for working outdoors, as the matt finish surpresses fingerprints and reflections very well. Super-TFT panels are better indoors, as the glossy coating often helps to produce more vibrant images. They are highly reflective as a result, however.
