Buy a Netbook – 3G broadband choice (integrated or dongle)

Netbooks are the ideal product when it comes to browsing the internet on the move, but how you go about accessing the net can differ widely and with varying costs. If you want to stay connected on the move, you’ll need a 3G adapter, and will have to choose between either an integrated solution or a separate 3G dongle. Read on to find out the best solution for you…

Over the past year or two, integrated 3G adapters have become more widespread, especially on high-end netbooks. You’ll have to pay more for the privilege, but with the SIM card slotting neatly behind the battery or out of the way, you’ll be able to access the internet wherever you go without having to remember to pack a separate USB 3G dongle.

Integrated 3G is ideal for users who don’t want the hassle of having to carry around an extra adapter. It’s easier to use, because the software will already be pre-installed, and because it’s integrated, battery life also benefits. It’s more expensive, however, with longer data contracts and less choice on offer. As such, consider how often you’ll be using the internet, and how long you’ll be keeping your netbook for.

If you’re on a tighter budget, a separate 3G dongle is a more suitable option for you. It’s not as neat a solution – as you’ll have to plug it into a spare USB port – but the netbook itself will be cheaper for a start. You’ll also have a far wider choice of data plans, with the ability to choose a plan that offers either lower cost, lower usage policies, or those with larger data allowances. You can even get 3G dongles that are contract free.

There’s also a third option – Mi-Fi – which offers the best of both worlds. Effectively a compact 3G dongle, it differs from other devices by acting as a wireless router. This means you’ll be able to leave it in your laptop bag, and connect your netbook to it without having to plug it in. The fact that multiple users can also access the internet using your Mi-Fi adapter is an advantage that neither of the other options here can compete with, making it ideal for most types of user.
