The Asus Eee PC Seashell 1005PE is the latest addition to Asus’ Seashell range, following on from the Asus Eee PC Seashell Karim Rashid, and it offers a great mix between style, performance and price. It sits lower in the range than some of the other Seashell models, but it’s also the first we’ve seen to feature the new Intel Atom N450 processor. Find out our first impressions after the jump…
There’s nothing unusual about the styling of the Asus Eee PC Seashell 1005PE, with the same curved styling and skinny profile as its siblings. Build quality isn’t quite so impressive, with some cheap feeling plastics in evidence on the lower half of the chassis, but it’s still robust enough for daily use.
Within the first five minutes it’s obvious that the keyboard on the Asus Eee PC Seashell 1005PE is better than many of its rivals, however, with no sign of flex under pressure, and well spaced keys that make it easy to type at speed. The touchpad offers equally good usability, with multi-gesture control that works very well.
Within the chassis of the Asus Eee PC Seashell 1005PE, the Intel Atom N450 processor offers a host of changes, not least the integration of the graphics chip onto the processor itself. This offers both a smaller footprint, and better energy efficiency. We haven’t noticed any performance benefits though, with lag still apparent when carrying out all but the simplest of tasks.

What the Asus Eee PC Seashell 1005PE is like during daily use remains to be seen, but first impressions are mixed. It’s compact, comfortable and features cutting-edge technology, but the cheap feel is out of sorts with other machines in the Asus Eee PC Seashell range.
