Motorola caused a stir with the Motorola DROID, with many people claiming it to be the finest Google Android smartphone yet. Can the slightly tone-down Euro version, the Motorola Milestone live up to the same expectations? Find out with our Motorola Milestone review…
The Motorola Milestone comes with an impressive 3.7-inch touchscreen and full QWERTY keyboard but we still have to admit that this is a rather slim and pocketable smartphone. The slide action you perform to get the keyboard to appear isn’t as smooth as we’d like, certainly not on a par with the Nokia N97 Mini. However, the overall build quality is generally better than we expected.

Once you’ve slide the keyboard into place you’ll find that typing can be a little awkward. The Nokia N97 had a similar problem of adding a D-Pad but at least Nokia put it on the left-had side. The Motorola Milestone has the D-Pad to the right of the keyboard so you’ll find yourself steadying the device with your right hand and typing with your left, which for most people isn’t too natural a position.
The rather odd screen size delivers a resolution of 854 x 480-pixel and this is very much where the Motorola Milestone comes into its own. Video looks great and whether your web browsing or just keeping in touch with Facebook, this is a nice device to use. What’s more, the onscreen keyboard is a pleasure to use for email and social networking.
Stepping up to the plate is the Google Android 2.0 OS and while the UK version has lost integrated Google Maps Navigation, you can still make the most of normal Google Maps where Layers works just as well. In fact, it works a lot better than the bundled MotoNav that has been included.
When it comes to performance you’ll find the Motorola Milestone offers the same degree of speed as the Apple iPhone 3GS but thanks to the power of Android you’ll be able to multi-task with this handset.
Verdict
If you’re left-handed you’ll love the keyboard of the Motorola Milestone and while the device offers plenty of features, a great build quality and a nice overall interface, we can’t help feeling that Motorola has tried to cram too much into this device.
