Since the release of Apple’s iPhone, the touchscreen paradigm has gone from strength to strength with practically every handset manufacturer releasing a number of touchscreen-based devices in 2009. But with such a far-reaching saturation of touchscreen devices within the marketplace, how can anyone decide which is the best touchscreen phone for them? Fortunately, we’ve compiled a list of our 5 favourite touchscreen devices. Read on after the jump for more details.
HTC Hero
The HTC Hero is one of the seminal devices of 2009, both in terms of its touchscreen tactility and also its overall functionality as a device. The Android powered device is designed to be customised, and you can really go to town, loading up its 7 home screens with whichever apps, widgets or shortcuts take your fancy. As touchscreen devices go, they don’t get much better than the HTC Hero – the interface is accomplished, tactile, and extremely responsive. Overall, the HTC Hero illustrates just what is possible with a device when phone manufacturers really push themselves.
Samsung Omnia HD
At a whooping 3.7-inches, Samsung’s Omnia HD has one of the biggest screens around. However, it’s not just big – it also features OLED and TouchWiz technology, which really makes navigating the device an absolute pleasure. In addition to its gigantic screen, the Omnia HD also has an 8 Megapixel camera, high quality video recording facilities, high-end web connectivity, and is fully customisable with apps, widgets and games. In short, you’d be hard pressed to find a more impressive touchscreen device.
Nokia N900
The Maemo 5 powered Nokia N900, which features a 32GB hard drive and a 5 Megapixel camera, is a serious piece of kit. The device, which officially began shipping in December, was certainly a late comer, but this doesn’t detract from how impressive a device it actually is. Again, the touchscreen interface is seamless, and you also have the option to use the full slide out QWERTY keyboard – essentially, the N900 gives you the best of both worlds. So far, it looks like the N900 is going to be a big success, the Maemo 5 platform is attractive to developers, and the device is attractive to customers, which is the perfect combination. Expect to hear a lot more about this device in 2010.
Blackberry Storm 2
The Blackberry Storm 2 picks off where the original Storm left off by smoothing over a few contentious issues and adding a few additional extras – in short, RIM have gone to town with the Storm 2, which makes it one of the best touchscreen devices out there. The new Storm 2 features better connectivity, an improved touchscreen interface, larger storage, as well as access to the now officially open Blackberry App World. So, if you’re looking for a good device, that features the best Blackberry has to offer, check out the Storm 2.
Nokia 5800 XpressMusic
Nokia’s 5800 XpressMusic has sold nearly 8 million units since it was released in early 2009, which is quite an impressive figure by anyone’s standards. Overall, the 5800 is a brilliant device, featuring an intuitive touchscreen interface, a large screen, as well as a host of useful apps and software, such as Comes With Music. In addition to this, the 5800 comes with 8GB of on board storage, a 3.2 Megapixel camera, and a built in GPS receiver. In short, the 5800 is one hell of a smartphone, and is easily one of the biggest success stories of 2009. This device is ideal for users that demand high-end performance, combined with awesome music applications, as well as good web connectivity, and a strong operating system.
