Top Ten Free Apple iPhone Apps

And that’s not particularly surprising when you consider that there is now well over 100,000 applications and games available in the Apps Store. Check out what we feel are the Top Ten Free Apple iPhone Apps right now…

The Apple iPhone has essentially revolutionised the way we use mobile phones, turning them from mere communication tools into sophisticated PCs that can be used in nearly every aspect of our lives. But what are the best Apps, and more importantly, which are the best free applications currently available on the Apps Store? Read on for our break down of the top 10 free apps that you need to own.

Check out our Apple iPhone 3GS review

Remote
Everybody loves music. It’s the life-force of a good party or gathering and it is often essential when trying to relax or work. Remote is nifty little application that gives you control over you iTunes or Apple TV account from your handset. This means that where ever you are in  your house you can change your music without having to do it on the actual PC, which is definitely helpful at house parties or when your in the bath.

Twitterific
Lets face it, if you haven’t got a Twitter account you’re pretty much out-of-the-loop - every man, dog, and child seems to have one these days. And Twitterific is brilliant little app from The Icon factory that allows you to read and publish Tweets from the comfort of your iPhone. Twitterific is a must have for any discerning Tweeter.

Max Injury
Granted the majority of Apps are designed to make your life more productive and generally easier. However, we can’t forget about fun. And games do not get much more fun that Max Injury - it is honestly one of the most addictive games we’ve played on the format. The basic premise of the game is to cause the maximum amount of injury to a rag-doll called Max - sounds crude, but seriously, it’s brilliant. A definite must have for any game lovers, young and old.

Shazam
Ever heard a song you absolutely adored but had no idea who it was? Well, these types of annoyances can now become a thing of the past thanks to Shazam. The basic idea is this: You hear a song you like the sound of, open the app up, press the Shazam button and, hey-presto, it tells you who the artist is, when they’re next touring and even includes links to YouTube videos.

Bloom
Remember Brian Eno? Well, he is the godfather of ambient music and he has now broken into the world of iPhone apps with his music-generator application, Bloom. The beauty of Bloom is that the sounds you can make with it are practically endless and are extremely beautiful to listen to. Bloom is an ideal app for aiding relaxation, making some seriously chilled music, or just for mucking around on when traveling from A to B. We love it, but then we’ve always been suckers for a bit of Eno.

UK Tax Calculator
Granted, doing your taxes isn’t the most exciting thing in the world. In fact, it’s probably the dullest thing you will ever experience next to counting pebbles on a beach. Nevertheless, it is an important aspect of modern day life, especially if you’re a freelancer! And the UK Tax Calculator app is the perfect tool for figuring out how much you owe out. The app itself is constantly updated, so its always up-to-date with changes and amendments to tax laws and is also extremely easy to use. All in all, it’s a top app that has become one of the most indispensable apps within our iPhone’s dock.

Box Office
If you like films you’ll love Box Office. Not only does it tell you what films are on near you, it also has reviews from Rotten Tomatoes, which is arguably one of the best film review sites going. In short, this is a simple, yet highly effective app that you’ll constantly be coming back to over-and-over-again.

Skype
Hardly anything in life if free, so when a company offers you free phone calls to anywhere in the world, it’s probably a good idea to take them up on it! Essentially, Skype is an internet phone call service that allows you to call other Skype users for free, where ever they are. In addition to this, Skype has a brilliant IM client, supports video conferencing, and is so easy to use you’ll be kicking yourself for not using it earlier.

Layer
Augmented Reality is going to be BIG apparently, so make sure you anticipate the trend and get yourself Layer, the app that uses your iPhone’s camera function to explore cityscapes and tell you were the things you desire are. For instance, if you’re looking for Pizza, type it into the search function, wait a second, and then Layer will bring up all the pizza places nearby which are shown on a rador-type thing that looks remarkably like the motion-sensors used by the marines in James Cameron’s Aliens film.

Whole Foods Market Recipes
Cooking can sometimes be a chore, especially when you don’t think you have enough in your cupboards to make anything halfway decent. However, the thing is, you must likely do have enough to make a feast, it’s just that your lack of knowledge limits you. This is where Whole Foods Market Recipes comes in. The app itself has hundreds of recipes ideas, detailed and easy-to-follow instructions, and even a meal generator in which you type in what you have to hand and it suggests what you could do with it. In short, with this little application, you’ll never have to eat a dull meal again. And the best part, Jamie Oliver is no where in sight!
