The next big push for netbooks is the use of the Nvidia ION graphics platform that brings with it 3D functionality on a netbook platform. The Asus Eee PC 1201N and HP Mini 311 look like being the first two devices to ship sporting the technology, find out how they compare with these benchmark results…
Netbooks aren’t designed with power in mind, they are intended to be affordable and practical for email and messaging. However, with the Asus Eee PC 1201N and HP Mini 311 both shipping with the Nvidia ION graphics core, the guys over at Noti decided to run a few 3DMark benchmarks and see how the machines handle.
It’s worth pointing out that the Asus Eee PC 1201N uses the Atom 330 processor, which is a dual-core desktop chip, while the HP Mini 311 uses the current generation Atom N280 single core chip. However, even though there is an obvious advantage for the Asus Eee PC 1201N it seems the extra core isn’t used by the GPU, so the HP Mini 311 actually performed better – winning two of three tests.
We wouldn’t read too much into these results, as a good portion of what makes a true netbook is the usability and handling, which is where the hands-on test really comes into its own.
