Stat Clash: Palm Pre versus Palm Pixi
Rating: 1.5

Palm has almost re-invented itself over night with the Palm Pre, bringing to market a sleek and desirable handset complete with spanking new OS. So it was only a matter of time before the followup, in the form of the Palm Pixi arrived, but which is better? Check out our stat-clash, and find out what happened when the Palm Pre went head-to-head with the Palm Pixi…

A lot can happen in a year, especially in the mobile phone market. Just think back 12 - 18 months, the only smartphone on the market that ticked all the boxes - touch screen UI, amazing connectivity, sleek design, advanced applications, powerful processor - was Apple’s iPhone.

Thankfully, a lot has changed since and Apple now has more competition than it would probably like from nearly every major phone company. Nevertheless, one of the first companies to really challenge Apple’s supremacy was Palm, with its Pre smartphone.

Granted, a lot of other challengers have risen in the past 12 months, but this doesn’t detract from the significance of the Pre and Palm’s soon-to-be-released Pixi device. But, say you had to choose between the Pre and the Pixi, which would you go for? Not Sure? Read on and find out for yourself…

Processor
In many schools the thought the Pixi is thought of as a Palm Pre “lite,” and if you apply this to the processor, you can see why some people may think that. For starters, both devices use extremely powerful and competent processors that’ll let you multitask until your hearts content. The Pre uses an ARM Cortex A8 600 MHz as well as PowerVR SGX graphics, and the Pixi uses a Qualcomm MSM7627 600 MHz processor with dedicated graphics accelerator. However, out of the two devices, the Pre has significantly more processing power than the Pixi thanks to its ARM Cortex A8 600 MHz processor, which means it wins in the processor stakes.
Winner: Palm Pre

Connectivity
With smartphones, connectivity is usually assumed to be a given - however, this isn’t always the case. For instance, the Palm Pre has practically every connection you could imagine - 2G Network GSM 850 / 900 / 1800 / 1900 3G Network HSDPA 850 / 1900 / 2100 and also WLAN, which makes it a smartphone in every sense of the word. However, the Pixi does not have support for Wi-Fi, which means no connecting to local networks and no savings on data costs, as all web connection will be done through 2 and 3G networks. In this context, the Pre is the clear victor once again.
Winner: Palm Pixi

Storage
There are quite a few smartphones doing the rounds now that have truly gigantic storage capabilities - the Nokia N900 gives you a potential 48GB to play with! Unfortunately, both the Palm Pre and the Palm Pixi are quite disappointing in this respect as both offer only 8GB of on board storage, and no MicroSD care slot - so 8GB, on both devices, is the absolute maximum you can store.
Winner: Draw

Camera
The good news is that both the Palm Pre and the Palm Pixi have built in cameras - we’d honestly be quite worried if a smartphone came out without one these days! However, out of the two devices, the Palm Pre has a far superior camera at 3.15 MP (2048×1536 pixels) with enhanced fixed focus and LED flash. The Pixi has a 2 MP (1600×1200 pixels) camera with built in flash, which isn’t too bad but unfortunately overall it just can’t compete with the Pre. In addition, neither devices have video capabilities, which like the storage, is a little disappointing.
Winner: Palm Pre

Display
Both the Pre and the Pixi have TFT capacitive touchscreen UIs and extremely high-end screen resolutions which makes both devices extremely usable and brilliant for viewing web pages, images and documents on. However, in a stat clash there can only be one victor, and in this context, it has to be the Palm Pre again as it has a much larger screen at 3.1-inches compared to the Pixi’s 2.6-inch screen — sometimes, bigger is definitely better.
Winner: Palm Pre
