The Nokia N900 finally started to ship this week and it seems that the end is now in sight for the Symbian N Series devices, as a spokesman for Nokia has officially come out and said that it would be released Maemo only devices in the Nokia N Series by 2010. Find out more about how Nokia plans to drop Symbian N series devices…
Nokia has started the wind down of its Nokia N Series devices, such as the Nokia N97, running the Symbian operating system and the transition will be fully made by 2010. So claims a story that has popped up on TRMP, which attended a Maemo-only event where a Nokia spokesman confirmed that Nokia has now adopted a two-OS strategy.
This move has been seen as the right move at the right time, as the S60 platform has been struggling to compete with Android and iPhone launches. It is claimed in the story that Nokia will still release Symbian based N Series devices but expect them to have all been replaced by 2012.
It seems that the Symbian OS will continue to be used in both the E Series and the newly announced X Series, so we’ll still see S60 touchscreen devices. However, it does seem that for the time being, we won’t have any mass market Maemo handset, just high-end models.
So, is this good news or would you like Nokia to go further and launch E Series and X Series Maemo devices?
