The Google Android OS is now over one year old and while Motorola has been a firm advocate of the OS, it has taken until now for the firm to get its first Android device out to the shops. The first thing you need to know about the Motorola DEXT is that it’s been worth waiting for. Sure, we were expecting it some six months ago but pretty much everything about the Motorola DEXT has been worth waiting for.
The look is very much the same as the new Nokia N97 Mini, with a metal and plastic body that is built around a 3.1-inch screen with 320 x 480 pixel resolution. However, the real trick is the stylish slide-out QWERTY keyboard that makes messaging and replying to emails so easy to handle. It’s the first Android phone to boast such a keyboard since the first T-Mobile G1 and we think it really makes a difference, giving the Motorola DEXT high-end profile it needs.
Unlike the keyboard on the Nokia N97 Mini, the keys aren’t individually mounted and initially feel a little cramped together. However, they feel of a god size and once you get accustomed to them you’ll soon type faster.
When it comes to making Google Android its own, the Motorola DEXT has its own distinct interface, the MotoBLUR. Motorola has done a great job at making the Motorola DEXT an easy smartphone to use. Simply input your email address and it’ll set up your accounts. We even found it an easy device to get the hand of with Facebook and Twitter, making this the potential new fav-phone of the twitterati. Other features include Wi–Fi, HSDPA, a 5-Megapixel camera that will also handle video recording.
Verdict
The Motorola DEXT is a good all-round smartphone that is easy to setup and use. Motorola hasn’t tried to push the envelope, simply producing a device that ticks the current market needs. Will it look dated in six months? We think so but for now, it’s a device we kind of like.
