The Sony Ericsson Naite is the first of the company’s new ‘Greenheart’ handsets that hopes to combine the best in telephony with a more environmentally-aware approach. As part of the new Greenheart ‘eco range’ of phones it’s easy to dismiss the Sony Ericsson Naite as nothing more than a gimmick. However, you will find that it tries it’s best to live up to its claims.
Sony Ericsson claims the Naite has a 15 per cent smaller carbon footprint than all its other devices. That’s because it’s made from 50 per cent recycled plastic. Then there is the charger, which comes with an advanced charging technology so it’ll switch itself off when the charge is full.
The look of the Sony Ericsson Naite is very much in the mould of other Sony Ericsson devices. With a weight of just 84g, this is a compact handset that sits nice and neat in the hand. However, you will find that the keypad is a little shoddy around the edges, with the keys being awkward to use and the overall layout being a nightmare to use.
When it comes to features you’ll find this is pretty much a standard phone. The screen has a typical 2.2-inch display with 320 x 240-pixel resolution. The interface is pleasing and easy to get to grips with and the overall build quality while not amazing is certainly good enough for an entry-level phone.
With 3G support you’ll find that being eco-friendly isn’t about having to get your messages late or lose out on surfing the web. With just 100MB of internal memory you’ll be glad of the microSD slot for extra storage. The camera is a rather lowly 2-Megapixel affair and we found taking snaps a little slow to respond.
However, the worse crime of the Sony Ericsson Naite is the poor battery life, as we found it running out of juice every couple of days, even with heavy use.
Verdict
The Sony Ericsson Naite may have green credentials but on the surface you wouldn’t necessarily know it. Instead, this is a rather unassuming entry-level phone with a half decent screen but a poor keypad and battery life.
