Google may be the money behind the Google Android platform but until now it has seemed quite content to let other manufacturers play with its toys. However, it looks like the so-called Googl gPhone – it’s own Google-branded smartphone – running Android is only a matter of months away. Join us after the jump for the latest on the Google gPhone plan…
Google is looking to follow in the steps of the T-Mobile G1 Android or the Vodafone Magic by launching its own branded – Google gPhone – Android device. However, rather than selling it through telcos, which is very much the current business model, Google plan to sell it through retailers, which could mean we’ll see the phone on the high-street and in the superstores.
Check out how to choose the right Android phone
This news has come from Northeast Securities analyst, Ashok Kumar, who apparently has already been discussing these plans with the Google gPhone designers. The story suggests that the phone could well be with us before the end of the year but with many retailers locking their supply chain early in the run up to Christmas, it would seem we’re more likely to see the Google gPhone in the New Year.
There are no details of who will be making the Google gPhone but it seems that it will be running on the Qualcomm 1GHz Snapdragon and will no doubt be launched to coincide with the launch of Android 2.0, known as Eclair.
We’ll bring you more news on the Google gPhone as and when we get it.
