Intel looks set to introduce its next generation of netbook processors on the 3rd January 2010. The next-gen single-core chip will be the Intel Atom N450. It has a speed of 1.6GHz but comes in a smaller package and runs on a reduced voltage. This means we can expect even slimmer and lighter netbooks in 2010. Find out more about the Intel Atom N450 and graphics due January 2010 after the jump…
Intel always likes to make a chip update right at the start of the year, usually in tandem with the CES show in Vegas and next year looks like being no exception.
The Intel Atom N450 may have the same clock speed as the current Intel Atom N270 processor found on such devices as the Samsung N110 or Samsung N310 but this single-core chip is a completely new beast. The main difference with this CPU is that it’s based on the smaller 32nm die size - known internally as PineView. So, while it delivers the same level of performance it does by using less power. This means netbooks in 2010 will be slimmer, lighter and with even better battery life.
The Intel Atom N450 isn’t the only new part to be introduced as we’ll see the introduction of the GMA 3150 graphics chipset. Now, this chip part is over two years old and still won’t allow for 3D graphics on a netbook, unlike the Nvidia ION based systems, but it does mean that netbooks will retain their entry-level price point, which is the main reason for opting for such a small device.
