The Apple iPod touch 3G takes everything we know about the Apple iPhone and strips away the connectivity for those who want all the features of the iPhone but none of that connected malarkey. So, is the Apple iPod touch 3G worse an upgrade? Read our Apple iPod touch 3G to find out for yourself…
On looks alone then the Apple iPod touch 3G hasn’t evolved any. In fact, it’s the same design we’ve come to know and love. That’s because Apple has made all the changes on the inside. The first thing is the amount of memory. We’re reviewing the 32GB version, but there is also a 64GB edition that can hold up to 14,000 songs, 90,000 photos or 80 hours of video.

So, what we get is the same look, weight and feel as the previous version. However, Apple has installed a faster processor that offers a 50 per cent speed boost to the Apple iPod touch 3G. The first time you use this new device you really see this speed boost, as apps load faster, navigation is smoother and there is generally no lag to getting things done.
What’s more, you’ll also see this speed boost made the most of when playing games or doing anything labour intensive. This is because Apple has built in the latest PowerVR SGX graphics controller too.
If this sounds like the Apple iPod touch 3G is starting to sound like a copy of the iPhone 3Gs then you’d be right. It’s not only the hardware that been updated as you’ll find Apple’s Voice Control software that lets the iPod touch load playlists, artists or songs without you having to interact with the device.
Then there is iTunes 9, which comes as standard, giving you instant access to all your music. The screen is as sharp and responsive as ever and getting the most from the Apple iPod touch 3G is a doddle.
It’s not all god news as the battery life is just six hours, so you’ll need to pack a charge cable to your MacBook if you’re going away for the weekend. However, this is a small sacrifice to pay for what is a great device.
Verdict
The Apple iPod touch 3G is more an update than a reinvention of the line but with the improved speed benefits and extra memory, this is a great device.

The iPhone 3GS doesn’t make the same grand leap that the iPhone 3G made from the first-generation model, but the latest Apple handset is still a compelling upgrade for some users. The iPhone 3GS is faster and we appreciate the new features and extended battery life, but call quality and 3G reception still need improvement.
