Dell 1737 review
Rating: 3.5

The Dell 1737 is a desktop replacement laptop that comes with a dual-core processor, large 17-inch screen and sufficient features to suit the whole family. What’s more, it’s also a good looking laptop available in a range of colours. Check out our Dell 1737 review and see how we got on with this heavy duty laptop…

The Dell 1737 is named after its 17-inch widescreen display that comes with a glossy coating and looks impressive. To keep the price down, you’ll find that it’s not the sharpest panel around but we found colour balance was generally good and its sharp enough for web surfing as well as playing movies.

When it comes to performance you’ll find the Dell 1737 is powered by an Intel Pentium Dual Core Processor T3400, which runs at 2.16GHz. This is fine for basic tasks and while it is a dual-core CPU, it’s rather entry level so you will find tasks like video editing and running multiple apps will slow the system down.

We were impressed with the 3072MB of memory shipped with this laptop and you’ll be thankful for it as the Windows Vista Home Premium OS can be rather memory intensive. The 250GB hard drive is standard for a machine of this price.

What we like about a 17-inch laptop like the Dell 1737 is that you’ll not only find a good-sized keyboard but there is also space for a separate numeric keypad. The keys are a good size and are well spaced but we found they could be slow to respond at times. The touchpad is also of a good size but it’s not the most responsive we’ve come across.

Extras include a slot loading DVD rewriter, Wi-Fi, four USB 2.0 ports, as well as HDMI, VGA-out, as well as SD card reader. It suffers from a poor battery life but being a large and bulky machine it is likely to spend most of its life being shared between rooms rather than used on the move, so this won’t prove a problem.

Verdict
The Dell 1737 is a good looking laptop that will suit the whole family. You won’t want to take this laptop on the road but with its decent screen and value for money keyboard, this is a decent all-round machine.

Best features
Big screen
