The Nokia N86 8MP is a slider-phone that follows very much in the line of earlier Nokia N95 and the more budget Nokia 6500 Slide. However, the big selling point with the N86 won’t be its styling, rather the addition of a 8-Megapixel camera – a first for Nokia. Check out how we got on with the Nokia N86 8MP in our full review….
The Nokia N86 8MP is a compact and squat slider phone that feels reassuringly solid in the hand. It weighs 149g and has a body that has a plastic body but the main frame is metal. Sure, it feels hefty in the hand but it’s surprisingly robust.
The screen is a 2.6-inch AMOLED display with a standard 240 x 320-pixel resolution. AMOLED delivers a sharp and bright image quality and the Nokia N86 8MP certainly delivers on this score. When being used either simply for navigating the phone or for using as a Viewfinder with the camera, we were impressed with what was on offer.
Being a slider phone, you need to give the top of the phone a push to open up the numberpad beneath, The individually mounted keys are backlit and have a decent size to them. Typing text messages and entering phone number has a smooth action and we found the keys generally responsive.
Below the screen is the standard D-pad and six navigation buttons. Running Symbian S60 3rd Edition, you’ll find this phone runs smoothly and apps load quickly. You can view files in Landscape or Portrait mode and the N86 8MP responds quickly.
As mentioned earlier, it is the 8-Megapixel with Carl Zeiss optics and dual-LED flash that is the big draw with this phone. Image quality is excellent and we found focussing and capture is quick and easy. If having a good camera on your phone is essential, then this certainly one device worth checking out.
When it comes to extra features the Nokia N86 8MP packs in everything you need. So, you’ll find HSDPA connectivity Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and it even ships with A-GPS and N-Gage. There is 8GB of internal storage the microSD slot supports up to 16GB of expansion storage.
Verdict
The Nokia N86 8MP my not have a touchscreen, may lack some of the latest design flourishes but we feel this is a great all-round of a smartphone that delivers on it’s aims – to be a great camera phone and good general purpose device.
