Best reasons to buy the HTC Hero

The HTC Hero was announced earlier this week and we now know it’ll ship from Orange, as their first Android powered phone, as well as being the T-Mobile G1 Touch, the successor to the T-Mobile G1. But which one are you likely to opt for? Here we look at the best reasons to buy the HTC Hero…

The HTC Hero was unveiled this week as the company’s third Android handset after the T-Mobile G1 and HTC Magic. Unlike the first two, which have exclusive contracts, this handset comes on either Orange or T-Mobile, but why would you want one in the first place? We look at the best reasons to buy the HTC Hero.

Check out our guide to choosing the right Android phone

1. The Lifestyle
Maybe the choice comes down to colour? HTC have played clever and given both Orange and T-Mobile different coloured ‘exclusive’ devices. T-Mobile is getting an exclusive BLACK version, while Orange gets an equally exclusive GRAPHITE version. So, whichever is your colour preference – other than white of course you’ll be able to choose.

2. Body Form
The HTC Hero measures 112 × 56 × 14mm and weighs 135g, making it one of the smallest smartphones on the market. What’s more, the new Teflon coating makes it one of the toughest too. The addition of a scratch and smudge resistant screen may be a little trivial but we reckon you’ll be glad of it on the long run, as you won’t need to wipe the screen every time you use it!

3. The Cost
T-Mobile expects to release the G1 Touch in July and it’ll be free if you sign up for a £40 per month Flext contract. Orange’s deal slightly undercuts that at £39.15 per month, but Orange’s contract is 24 months, as opposed to T-Mobile’s (current) Flext tariff only asking for 18 months, so that’s a £219.60 difference in the long run.

4. The HTC Hero has Sense UI
HTC Sense is a brand new user interface and is the biggest new feature on the HTC Hero. Based around TouchFlo, HTC is touting it as “an intuitive, seamless experience built upon three fundamental principles - make it mine, stay close, and discover the unexpected.” This all boils down to the use of widgets on the Homescreen, easy synchronisation of social networking tools and an advanced Search function.

5. Packs in the Power!
HTC hasn’t been shy when it comes to the tech specs on the HTC Hero, as you’ll find it comes with a 3.2-inch touchscreen, 5-Megapixel screen, 512MB memory, A-GPS, Bluetooth 2.0, Wi-Fi, 3.2mm audio jack, microSD card slot, G-Sensor, digital compass and we’re even promised a long battery life!
