Apple iPhone 3G S review
Rating: 4.5

For many, the Apple iPhone 3G changed the way we look at high-end smartphones forever. No longer are they just for your nerdy mate, they’re cool, sophisticated and most of all, usable by the average person. The Apple iPhone 3G S is the third incarnation of the now classic device and here we get our hands on it, to see whether it’s worth upgrading. Check out the full review of the Apple iPhone 3G S after the jump…

The Apple iPhone 3G S is a great looking smartphone and now that it’s available in black, as well as classic white, there is even more choice. That said, the look and feel of the device is exactly the same as the old model. Which is no bad thing, but you’ll have to opt for the black version to mark yourself out from the crowd.

This latest version of the iPhone shows Apple starting to get to grips with smartphones. This can be seen in the range of new features that make their appearance here for the first time. We have video recording, a built-in compass to help with navigation, and even voice controls. All of which have been present in most Nokia and HTC devices for years, but only just making an appearance here.

The voice controls prove the most effective, as you can use it to perform basic phone tasks, or load your music player. What’s more, you can even ask it simply questions, such as “Who sings this song?” and it’ll answer correctly and promptly.

The thing that impresses most about the Apple iPhone 3G S is what the S stands for – Speed. This is the quickest iPhone to date, with Apple claiming its 2.1x faster than the original Apple iPhone 3G. We’ve found it to be fast and reliable. For instance, opening apps is now lightening quick.

It’s this usability that keeps the Apple iPhone a highly usable and user-friendly phone. After all, in a couple of seconds you can change between functions, search through emails, find your location on a map or just load up the music player.

Verdict
If you already own an Apple iPhone 3G, there isn’t enough here to want you to pay for an upgrade. However, if you’ve so far stayed unarmored with the iPhone concept, the Apple iPhone 3G S may be the version for you!

Faster than ever
