Homescreen
The main screen on any phone is where you’ll spend up to 85 per cent of the time, so making sure it works the way you want it to is essential. This is why Nokia has created a new, user-friendly, Homescreen. Based around six lozenges you can add your favourite apps, the people you need to contact the most often or just populate it with your most used social networking sites.
QWERTY Keyboard
If you want to write on the go you need a decent keyboard and the full QWERTY offering on the Nokia N97 has been designed for use in any situation. Hidden away on an ingenious hinge, you’ll find it sits neatly in your hands, so reaching out to any key isn’t a strain or a chore. What’s more, the navigation pad on the left-hand side works exceedingly well and is highly responsive.
Camera
OK, so it’s not an 8-Megapixel camera but the 5-Megapixel happy snapper at least comes with Carl Zeiss optics, which means you’ll get a great image nearly every time. What’s more, the interface is really easy to use, so making the most of the camera makes it almost second nature. There is a video mode, which supports 16:9 as well as a more conventional 4:3 aspect ratio and even records at a full 30 frames per second, as well as a secondary video camera on front – what more could you want?
Touchscreen
The Nokia N97 comes with a 3.5-inch touchscreen display. Some have bemoaned that it isn’t an AMOLED display or that it’s a resistive panel instead of a capacitive display but we’ve found it to be a bright and easy to view screen. Sure, scrolling isn’t as smooth as can be found on a capacitive panel but we’ve found accessing apps quick and trouble free, which is the most important part of using any device.
Symbian S60 5th Edition
The Symbian S60 5th Edition OS makes the most of the touchscreen display, making it quick and snappy to load and switch between apps. However, it is the fact that it is an open platform, so anyone can develop apps for it that makes it truly versatile and easy to recommend. Nokia has just launched the Ovi Store, a place where you’ll find all the latest games and apps for the Nokia N97, which in itself makes getting the latest tools even easier.

I find the battery suddenly runs out of power without warning, leaving a “dead” ‘phone. Otherwise fine, though the titchy keyboard leaves room for typing errors aplenty.
