Acer has announced that later this year it will be releasing its first Google Android smartphone and we may even see the rollout of an Android netbook. The company is no stranger to alternate operating systems, as the company shipped its first netbook, the Acer Aspire One, with a Linux based OS. Check out the full details after the jump…
Acer has announced that it has joined the Open Handset Alliance, which means it will be able to start developing its own devices that run on the Android operating system. The company has also announced that it expects to have its first smartphone running Android up and running and onsale by the end of this year.
With the company already working on Android smartphones, are we likely to see the emergence of an Android netbook from the company? It seems likely, after all, Acer, after Asus, was among a handful of laptop manufactutrers to launch a netbook with a Linux OS. The Acer Aspire One was the best selling netbook of 2008 and Acer is hoping to repeat the success with its first Android devices.
We’ll have to wait and see if Acer puts any new designs together or uses the basic design of the Acer X960 smartphone that currently runs Windows Mobile.
