If you own a Nokia 5800 then you’ll know how good a phone it is. This week saw the launch of Nokia’s Ovi Store , a one-stop shop for apps, utilities and other Nokia software. The site offers a host of paid for tools but we thought we’d check out what there was for those on a budget. So, check out the best free Nokia 5800 apps currently on offer on the Ovi Store…
The Nokia Ovi Store is very much in keeping with the Apple Store and BlackBerry App World in that it brings together the best of paid for apps, as well as those free pieces of software that are essential. On the opening week of Ovi Store we thought it a good idea to check out what was on offer for free for the Nokia 5800, here is what the site recommended:
Buddycloud
Type: Social Networks
Size: 0.265 MB
When it comes to sharing information with your friends and vice versa about where you are, where you’ve been and the experiences you had there then you need Buddycloud. This app is a mobile social location platform and an Open location API that allows you to add comments about places you’ve been, helping your friends get a better idea of where is fun or interesting to check out.
RaceChrono
Type: Sports
Size: 0.308 MB
This app helps you the most of the GPS on your Nokia 5800 as it allows you to time all sorts of racing and outdoor events. The features allow you to analyse lap times, making it perfect for motor sports, or those who like to circuit train. Apparently, this version is good until October 31th 2009 when the license expires, after which an updated version will need to be downloaded.
Flixwagon
Type: Photo & Video
Size: 0.127 MB
Flixwagon allows you to get video content online at the click of a button. It can be embedded on your blog, used as a feed on Facebook or posted to Share with Ovi. What’s more, you can set video as public or private, add broadcast alerts to friends and family via email and Twitter, and have two-way IM chat with your viewers.
Nokia Handwriting Calculator
Type: Utilities
Size: 0.177 MB
Even Nokia Beta Labs apps can be foudn on Ovi Store and Nokia Handwriting Calculator is a great example of Nokia ’s new handwriting recognition technology. It allows you to carry out maths sums using the touchscreen display of the Nokia 5800 as though you were using a dedicated tablet. It’s still a Beta app so there may be the odd bug but it’s shaping up to be a powerful tool in its own right.
Nokia Photo Browser
Type: Photo & Video
Size: 1.159 MB
Another killer app that is causing something of a stir on Beta labs is Nokia Photo Browser, which is an experimental photo browser that lets you view and share your photos quickly and easily with others. As with Nokia Handwriting Calculator, it’s still a Beta app so there may be the odd bug but it’s shaping up to be a powerful tool in its own right.
WorldMate 2009
Type: City Guides/Maps
Size: 2.202 MB
This is an app that wants to ’simplify your travel’. It does this by turning your Nokia 5800 into an personal travel assistant, offering real-time Flight-alerts for over 350 airlines. You can look up flights from every every commercial airport in the world, as well as check out the weather in the destination you’re about to hit. Other features include a World Clock and even a Currency Converter.
AP News
Type: News & Info
Size: 0.574 MB
AP News has been designed specifically for use with your Nokia 5800 and allows you to tap into its newsfeed and interactive photo galleries. Putting the marketing spin to one side, this is a great resource that gives you the latest headlines, as well as allowing you to pass them on to friends with one click.
So, there we have it, the best of the freebies from week one of the Ovi Store. Do they live up to expectations or could the site do a little more to help the Nokia user on a budget? Let us know in the Comments section below.

I love the Nokia 5800. A fabulous alternative for the overly hyped (and priced) iPhone. Camera, Audio Player, Touch screen, Nice resolution. This will be my next phone, definately.
