The BlackBerry has come a long way since it’s first handset in 1999 and first smartphone in 2002. So much so that the BlackBerry Storm is one of our favourite all-time devices. Sure, the handsets have got a lot better, smaller and some would say cooler but it’s the range of applications that have really made the device its own.
Here we look at the latest top five apps for your BlackBerry, designed to help it work smarter, smoother and longer.

If you’ve got a SlingBox that allows you to watch your own TV anywhere you happen to be, then you need this app on your BlackBerry. It’s still in public beta stage, so isn’t the finished article by any means but it mans you can watch live TV or watch anything your recorded on your SkyBox or telly HDD.

OK, so this isn’t exactly new but it’s still one of our favourite Twitter apps and makes micro-blogging so much easier on your BlackBerry. This latest version supports any device that uses BlackBerry OS 4.1.0+, but you’ll need BlackBerry OS 4.2+ is you want to make the most of TwitPic support. If TwitterBerry is a little old news for you, then next up we have SocialScope that allows you to get Twitter feeds, as well as tie in your FaceBook entry as well. There are a wide variety of ways you can use this app, either just to track your friend tweets, run FacBook entries alongside or simply manage the timeline of entries since last you logged on. This is a powerful app and one we’re bound to see a lot more of.

Slacker Radio
Originally launched on the iPhone, this little app allows you to listen to the radio even if you’re not currently in a wireless network. It does this by storing the details on your BlackBerry’s memory card, caching it and storing it until you need it. This latest is also said to improve battery life and signal performance over earlier versions.

BeamReader
If you want to read PDF file son your BlackBerry then it has always been seen as something of a chore. BeamReader has been around for a while but it’s recently come out of beta and is now a fully-fledged application. It’s not just PDFs that it’ll allow you to read, as it will just as easily let you read Word docs and other work files for that matter. It’s an essential app and well worth getting ahold of.
