Asus created the netbook market and has released more devices than all the other companies put together but we still get excited whenever one is announced. The latest is the Asus Eee PC 1000HE and while it sports the same 10.1-inch screen we’ve come to expect from the Eee PC netbook, this one is sporting Intel’s latest Atom N280 processor. As far as we know, this is the first sighting of the chip.
The Intel Atom N280 hasn’t been officially launched but it’s already being touted inside the Asus Eee PC 1000HE, with Asus claiming it helps to give this netbook to a stunning 9.5 hour battery life. The Intel N280 processor, runs at only 2.5 Watts of power. The chip also has a slightly faster clock speed, 1.66GHz, and has even been couple with the new GD40 chipset, so we should see a definite boost in performance.
As well as the battery life, the Eee PC 1000HE has a new “chiclet” keyboard, with gaps between the keys similar to those on the new MacBook range, which gives the keyboard a more rigid feel to it as you type. Extras are pretty much what we’ve come to expect from the Asus range, with 802.11g Wi-Fi in place and a choice of either Windows XP or Asus Linux bundled with it.
However, the big change with this netbook is that battery life. The Asus Eee PC 1000HE will get physically released in the flesh at CeBIT next month, so not long to wait until we can get all day battery life.
The Asus Eee PC 1000HE is available now for pre-order in some countries, but not so far in the UK. It has a list price of $400.
