E-Ten Glofiish X610 review
Rating: 3

The E-Ten Glofiish X610 could well be the last smartphone the company launches under its own brand name due to it being bought out by Acer last year. We’re expecting new Acer/E-Ten devices announced next month at the Mobile World Congress, in the meantime, the E-Ten Glofiish X610 is a great example of what’s to come.

The E-Ten Glofiish X610 is essentially an update of the previous X600, and is very much the entry-level device in the range. The design is slim and compact in the hand and weighing 135g, it’s not too bulky in the pocket. That said, you won’t want it hanging out of your shirt pocket, it’s a little to big for that.

The 2.8-inch screen has a typical 240 X 320-pixel resolution, which is fine for emails and texts but you won’t find yourself working too much on this device. After all, you won’t find a QWERTY keyboard, which helps keep the size down.

What makes the Glofiish X610 great to use is the UI, which takes the standard Windows Mobile interface and puts a far more user-friendly skin over the top. It runs smoothly and most keystrokes feel logical rather than forced, making this an easy phone to use.

When it comes to the guts of the phone, it’s a little short on memory, coming with just 64MB of RAM and 128MB of ROM, which is a bit mean in this day and age. Sure, it loads and runs Windows Mobile 6.1 with a fair degree of ease but you’ll definitely need to add a microSD card for extra storage.

Being an entry-level smartphone you won’t find 3G, the Glofiish X610 relying on EDGE to make things tick over at less than breakneck speeds. There are a few nice features, though, like Wi-Fi and Bluetooth as standard, and E-Ten also bundles GPS into the device.

Verdict
The E-Ten Glofiish X610 is very much an entry-level smartphone and while we have no problems with that aspect, it’s the rather mean specs bundled inside that disappoint. On the plus side, the interface is nice to use, which helps to make this a rather pleasing budget device.

Best features
Smooth interface
Decent battery life

Not so good
Lack of 3G
Low specs

Nokia N96
If the N79 still isn’t powerful enough for you, then the Nseries flagship smartphone may be up your street. Its built-in BBC iPlayer app and 16GB stash of memory sets it apart from fellow Nseries cohorts.

Nokia 6220 Classic
This Symbian S60 smartphone may lack some extra mods to qualify for Nseries membership but its feature line-up is pretty stellar for a pocket-friendly mid-range smartphone.

Samsung i900 Omnia 16GB
This Windows Mobile OS powered touch phone steams in with a similar features line-up as the N79 but serves up a mammoth 16GB dollop of memory.
