The Acer 10 Aspire One launched last week but it seems that one vital ingredient was missing – choice of operating system. Fortunately, Acer 10 Aspire One will now come with Linux as well as Windows XP. The move has been made in a response to user demand. Last week’s announcement made Linux conspicious by its absense, especially considering that Acer made such a deal out of it’s own interface with the launch of the Acer Aspire One 8.9-inch version.
When Acer launched its first successful netbook, the cunningly named Aspire One, it shipped with Linpus Linux with an interface especially designed for Acer. It meant that even those new to mobile computing could make the most of the 8.9-inch netbook as it came with everything you needed, including word processing and host of other applications.
It also came with its own novel email client that allowed you to manage all your separate email accounts from within one application. This works really well and it seems you’ll now be able to take up the option with when the new 10-inch model launches next month.
The Acer 10 Aspire One will have the same spec and be equipped with an Intel Atom N270 processor, 1024MB of memory and 160 GB internal hard drive regardless of whether you opt for the Windows XP or Linux version. Weighing 1.18kg, the Acer Aspire One comes with a 10.1-inch LED screen (1024 x 600 pixels) that comes with a built-in Acer webcam above the panel.
Connectivity includes Bluetooth, 802.11g Wi-Fi, as well as Ethernet for fixed connections. There is even Acer’s Signal Up technology for as strong a signal as possible. The Acer Aspire One has the option to be fitted with 3G or WiMAX but there are no details yet of any telcos choosing to take this option on.It will come in four high-gloss colour options including white, blue, red and black.
The Acer 10 Aspire One will cost £299 (inc. VAT) when it ships towards the end of February. In the meantime, if you want to check out the current Acer Aspire One offerings, click here.
