The Samsung X360 is an ultraportable laptop that is everything the Apple MacBook Air promised to deliver but for Windows users. Weighing in at just 1.4kg, and measuring an amazingly slim 311 x 225 x 34mm, this is a great all-round machine that manages to cram in a 13.3-inch LED screen into its slim and light design.
The screen has a resolution of 1280 x 800 pixels, which isn’t HD compatible but it means that images look crisp and sharp. Being LED you’ll find colour reproduction is stunning and it proved a bright panel for work and for watching DivX movies on.
The widescreen allows for a good-sized keyboard. The keys pop through the casing of the laptop, making them easier to type on when working on the move, as well as making them more rigid in their mountings. The touchpad and mouse buttons are of a good size too, and we found navigation on the Samsung X360 smooth and easy.
The specification of our test laptop came with an Intel Core 2 Duo U9300 processor and 3072MB of memory. You can opt for a mechanical of SSD drive, with the latter being a neat 128GB version. It ships with Windows Vista Business Edition, which may well be its only flaw.
The design is made from Samsung’s standard attention to detail, with a glossy black lacquered body that easily shows smudges but it’s a small price to pay for the look. The build quality is tough enough to withstand being treated rough, and if you want to use it out and about, which you will, you’ll easily get seven hours from the battery.
While the MacBook Air had to sacrifice a great deal in order to be so slim and light, the Samsung X360 simply makes the most of what is on offer, so you’ll find a full complement of ports and connections. There isn’t an optical drive but Samsung includes an external unit in the box, so you won’t need to budget for one.
