Vodafone is in the process of testing its 16Mbps but could Vodafone HSPA+ be on its way quicker than anyone suspected? Well, the first commercially available HSPA+ modem is about to go on show at the Mobile World Congress, in Barcelona.
From the 16th February, Barcelona will play host to the Mobile World Congress, the world’s best established communications technology event, and Huawei will be showcasing, as it claims, the world’s first commercial HSPA+ Stick.
In a report that promises ‘throughout 2009 Huawei is committed to transforming your networks from “data pipes” into “profit streams.”’ Huawei has tucked away a small bit of information that shows HSPA+ is on the way, as it points out that it will be show casing ‘The world’s first commercial HSPA+ Stick.’
Those with long memories may well recall that back in February of 2008, Vodafone released an official statement that it was working with Huawei, as well as Ericsson and Qualcomm to trial Release 7 HSPA+ (also known as HSPA Evolution).
The initiative will help to establish whether HSPA+ is capable of delivering data throughput rates of up to 28.8Mbps compared to the 14.4Mbps maximum offered by today’s HSPA networks. If successful, the technology has the potential to extend the life of today’s HSPA infrastructure still further.
Well, it seems as this collaboration is bearing fruit. As we reported last week, Vodafone is claiming that it can safely manage 16Mbps, but will be promoting the service as it’s 21Mbps connection. No official release date has been set but with the hardware in place, we could well see it roll out sooner than people expected.
