Vodafone is trialing it’s faster mobile broadband service and is set to launch it’s fastest ever romaing packge here in the UK following extensive HSPA+ tests.
2009 is setting itself up as the year that mobile broadband goes mainstream, as we’ll see more laptops and netbooks coming with the service built-in. We’ll also see the top-end phones making the most of it.
Vodafone is claiming that it can safely manage 16Mbps, but will be promoting the service as it’s 21Mbps connection. OK, so we’re all accustomed to mobile broadband services never really delivering at the speed we were expecting – the current 7.2Mbps is never, if ever attained but this is a considerable boost.
Vodafone worked with Ericsson and Qualcomm to prove the potential of the technology in the field, following impressive data throughput rates achieved in laboratory tests. We just hope that it can maintain such speeds when it goes live later this year.
HSPA+ is the next step in the delivering on the promise of real mobile broadband and increases speeds through the use of an advanced modulation technique, known as 64QAM. Performance can be enhanced through the use of multiple antennae using the already established MiMo (Multiple Input Multiple Output) technologies.
Sadly, no news as to whether the coverage area for mobile broadband will be strengthened or widened to accommodate the new services.
