We’re all being told we should do more for the environment and think about recycling, so how about a mobile phone that’s made from recycled plastic bottles?
The Motorola Renew W233 does exactly that and if you need to stress your ‘green credentials’ to your friends, tell them it’s all in the name, Renew, innit. Motorola is expecting great things from this budget-range green piece, as it’s the first of a whole range set for release this year.
The casing may be made from PET bottles but Motorola is making big claims about the rest of the device too. You’ll find it uses 20 per cent less power than similar phones in its price/spec-bracket and the packaging it comes in also has minimal impact - designed to help limit your carbon footprint.
When it comes to specification it’s not exactly cherry-picked from the skip but it’s what you’d expect from a standard mobi. So, you’ll find a 1.6-inch colour screen with 128 x 128-pixel resolution that supports 65k colours. There is no camera or web browser, so the candybar is very much a phone for those with basic needs.
However, it’s a dual-band GSM device that uses Motorola’s own CrystalTalk noise reduction magic, so chatting with friends and family will be crisp and clear. Storage is limited but it comes with a microSD slot, so you can add plenty of contacts and extras. To help reinforce the recycling ethos, Motorola even includes a pre-paid envelope, so when you’re ready to ditch the device, you can send it back to whence it came.
Details of pricing and release date are still under wraps but from the images we’ve seen, it looks like T-Mobile is already signed up to offer the phone.
