2009 will be a fantastic year for phone fans. New devices are set to come careering into stores almost as soon as the new year fireworks have fizzled out, bringing brand new technology and eye-widening abilities.
What’re we looking forward to the most? There’s tons. From fancy new hardware features to stonking services that’ll sit on top of next-gen networks.
Read on, broaden your mind, and get set for another year of mobile masterpieces.
Nokia N97
Nokia’s first touchscreen Nseries is shaping up to be the most important phone of the year.
Not only will it squeeze in widgets to its standby screen, a gorgeous 16:9 widescreen and finger-friendly controls, but there’ll also be a slide out keyboard, making it perfect for portable e-mail without bulking up the handset.
Inside there’s also 32GB of storage as standard, and a simple microSD card can enlarge that to a whopping 48GB.
It’ll be the first of many high-end Nokia touchscreens, and from the day it hits shelves it’ll change the mobile world for ever.
Sony Ericsson W705
This new flagship Walkman phone is completely redesigned from the ground up. Its brushed metal shell not only looks the business, but inside there’s Sony’s newest Walkman software, dishing up faster performance and improved sound, as well as enhanced functions such as SenseMe and shake control.
It’ll also come bundled with Sony Ericsson’s next-generation bluetooth headphones.
We’re not talking oversized wireless cans either. These are earbud-style lughole-stuffers, with a tiny battery pack built into the cable.
This handset’s sure to make waves in the next few months, and could mark the second coming of Walkman.
INQ2
The INQ1 has only just gone on sale through 3, blending social networks together and combining them with existing mobile contacts.
It’s also one of the few phones to work properly with instant messaging platforms, letting friends send a message to the handset from their PC, and alerting the owner without them having to run a specific app. We’re till not satisfied though.
The next version will come packing GPS and a QWERTY keyboard for faster messaging on the move. It wouldn’t hurt if it looked a bit less bulky too.
Nokia 5800
Nokia’s first ever touchscreen handset will touch down in the first quarter of 2009, bringing neat new software features, such as RSS feeds on the standby screen and one-touch updates from friends.
It also packs handwriting recognition, a more-than-capable MP3 player and a 16:9 widescreen to really show off movies and TV shows. There’ll also be the option to buy it with a Nokia Comes With Music subscription, serving up unlimited music downloads that’re yours to keep for ever.
Now can you see why we’re excited?
Asus P656
When Asus finally releases its first mobile phone we’ll have cause for celebration. Word is it’ll pack Windows Mobile and an 800MHz CPU. That’s a level of horsepower not far from the first-generation Asus Eee PC. Laptop power in your pocket? Sign us up.
