Garmin may be famed only for its satnav devices, but this year it’s set to make an assault on the mobile phone market with not one but two communications devices.
First up is the Nuvifone, which was first announced last year but has been off the radar for months. It’s a touchscreen device with few physical buttons and will apparently meld iPhone-style usability with full-on Garmin satnav skills. It was originally due to go on sale towards the end of 2008, but will now launch in the second half of 2009. This could be the holy grail of satnav phones, though, so it could be well worth the wait.
New on the scene is an as-yet-unnamed handset powered by Google’s Android operating system, previously seen on the T-Mobile G1. This device will be manufactured by Asus (the Taiwanese company responsible for the Eee PC netbook), although aside from that and the fact that it will have built-in GPS, we don’t know anything concrete about it. It should be released at around the same time as the Nuvifone.
We’ll bring you more on these devices as we get it. In the meantime you can read up on Garmin’s traditional satnav gear here.
