Vodafone has come up with a nifty new service that allows you to load up your mobile with tons of widgets, handy mini-applications that automatically update themselves using a 3G or Wi-Fi connection.
Widget Manager, as it’s called, is currently available only in an unfinished beta version (so expect the odd bug) and only for Nokia N96, N95 8GB, N78 and 6210 handsets. The full release, sometime next year, will support handsets from more manufacturers, over multiple platforms.
Once downloaded and installed, you can select your own supply of widgets from a list that includes the likes of Live Scores, Weatherbug, Currency Converter, Train Times, RSS Reader, Amazon and FHM Hot Babes. The widgets are free, as is the service, but you’ll have to pay data charges to update them - this is really best suited to unlimited data plans.
More widgets will follow in the coming months - with Vue Cinemas and the BBC set to offer up the next batch, and Vodafone plans to allow developers to make and publish their own. In the meantime Nokia-owning Vodafone customers can download the service here.
