If you’re on a mission to get rid of that spare tire, then the W580i phone is just the spur you need to start pounding the pavement.
This compact music phone has hidden motion sensor, along with a fitness app and pedometer to supervise your new fitness regime. Here’s the low-down on how to fight the flab Walkman style.
Step 1: Enter your vital stats
The W580i’s fitness app sits pride and place in the main menu, so it’s pretty easy to fire up. If you want to know how many calories you’ve torched and if you’ve burned off that cheeky pizza you had at lunch then you must first turn the calorie counter on. When this is activated you will be asked to input your vital stats – height, weight, D.O.B. and gender. Now, don’t tell porkies about how you’re seven foot tall and weight 150 pounds. Be truthful if you’re serious about getting fit.
Step 2: Will it be running or walking?
For more accurate monitoring of your progress, you can set your stride calibration by recording a sample of your running or walking technique over a set amount of yards. Once this is done, it’s time to hit the pain trail. You can choose the Walking mode and start stretching your muscle with a power walk and this shows distance covered and steps taken. If you step up the pace to running you’re privy to more info; distance, time, average speed and lap times are displayed.
Step 3: Count your steps
Now you’ve got a sweat on, you can check up on your step progress and a little counter ticks over in the bottom left corner of the standby screen. The pedometer takes a while to warm up and you will need to take a good few steps before it starts working, so don’t make the common mistake of thinking its bust. Just to put your steps into perspective, one mile is equal to 2000 steps. Ouch. Remember, no pain, no gain.
Step 4: Monitor your progress
A couple of days into your fitness programme and you can compare the total steps taken on a basic level with the weekly results table. If you want a more advance progress report, a Java-based fitness app can tell you total and daily average distance covered, time and steps taken and calories off loaded. This can also be plotted visually in graph form while there’s even medals to be awarded once you beat certain times and goals.

Admittedly, these earphones won’t help you lose weight but at least you can wirelessly listen to your music while working up a sweat and sore muscles. With the W580i supporting Stereo Bluetooth you can happily stream your music to the HBH-DS970 in stereo without fear of wrapping the wires around a lamppost and garrotting yourself while out on a midnight jog.
