We’ve heard plenty of rumblings and rumours about Microsoft releasing a Zune-branded mobile phone, but now it seems that the software giant won’t be launching a new gizmo - instead they could be releasing a new version of Windows Mobile that includes Zune-esque styling and functionality.
The revelation comes courtesy of some leaked shots of WIndows Mobile 6.5 which, as its name suggests, is a halfway house between the current version of Windows Mobile and the next full OS update, Windows Mobile 7. Apparently the 6.5 platform will be dubbed Zune Mobile and feature similar music performance to the Zune MP3 player, plus access to Youtube, Facebook and more through an interface that looks just like the Zune’s.
Of course, being unofficial, the shots could be Photoshopped mockups from some Internet wag with too much time on their hands - we won’t know for sure what Microsoft has up its sleeve until CES, which kicks off in early January 2009.
