Datawind’s PocketSurfer mobile web devices are a great way of enjoying full internet access on the go, but the new wave of Netbooks are chasing it down hard. Which is why Datawind’s taking the ‘if you can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em” approach, letting slip as it did today news of its very own netbook, with web access for no extra cost.
When quizzed about netbook rivals such as the Asus Eee and Dell Inspiron Mini series, Datawind’s COO, David Elder, let slip that the company was planning its own portable computer to combat them: “We’re heading down that road. Next year you’ll see a netbook product,” he said.
Elder wouldn’t reveal anymore about the specs, but he did admit it would have to be bigger: “we’ll offer a decent size of screen”.
Best news of all though: if it’s anything like the current PocketSurfer range, which offer 20 hours a month of web surfing for free, you won’t have any extra bills down the line, just speedy browsing for a one-sum. “It would be contractless”, he said.
