You don’t need a phone line to get broadband any more. You don’t even need a laptop. Just grab one of these cheap mobile broadband adaptors and plug it into either your own computer, or the one that comes bundled free! You’ll be online in seconds, and all without the hassle of pesky wires!
The technology works the same as a mobile phone, but instead of worrying about phone calls, the adapter shovels data between your computer and the internet, using the mobile network to keep you connected, even if you move around.
It’s fast too, with speeds reaching 7.2mbps through 3G networks – that’s faster than some landline broadband connections!
What to watch
Not all networks offer the same speeds, and all offer different levels of coverage too. While Vodafone boasts a maximum speed of 7.2mbps, and 3 offers connections up to 3.6mbps, T-mobile offers speeds up to 2mbps, and Orange offers up to 1.8mbps.
However, the numbers are just half the equation. Since speeds drop dramatically the further you are from a transmitter, you should pay as much attention to the coverage in your area as you do to the possible speeds. After all, what use is a contract with a speedy network, if the distance from its transmitter leaves you connecting at dial-up speeds?
Extras and freebies
Most mobile broadband deals come with extra incentives or freebies. Top of the pile are deals that include a free laptop. They vary from network to network, so shop around for one you like the look of. However, bear in mind that its specs will increase along with the monthly charge you pay for broadband.
Also, keep your eyes peeled for free Wi-Fi thrown in. T-Mobile’s mobile broadband deals also let you use the company’s Wi-Fi hotspots when you’re out and about. They’re even faster than mobile broadband, and won’t chew through your laptop’s battery so quickly either.
Check your usage
All mobile broadband tariffs come with usage caps. They limit the amount of data you’re allowed to download each month. Make sure you know the limits before you sign up, but don’t let them worry you too much as just using the web and e-mail shouldn’t cause you to come close to them.
However, if you’re downloading video, streaming radio or TV, or taking part in video chats, there’s a chance you’ll use much more. Pick a tariff with a limit around 5GB per month to be on the safe side.
Monthly money matters
Just like a mobile phone contract, you’ll be locked into a 12, 18 or 24 month agreement when you buy a mobile broadband adapter. Costs vary quite widely, so be careful to shop around for the right deal for you. 3 currently offer some great deals, starting at just £10 a month for 12 months with a 1GB limit, although you’ll need to pay extra for the USB modem. These rise to £30 per month, with a free modem and a whopping 15GB allowance – but mean you’re locked in to an 18 or 24 month contract.
