A job advert posted by Microsoft has let slip plans for a software marketplace called Skymarket.
The job for a ‘Senior Product Manager’ details the task as to “drive the launch of a v1 marketplace service for Windows Mobile”, hinting that Microsoft are looking to get in on some iPhone style App store action.
According to the job spec whoever gets the gig will have to “make the Windows Mobile marketplace the place to be for developers wishing to distribute and monetize their Windows Mobile applications.”
Apple’s App Store on iTunes would be Skymarket’s biggest competition with a bevy of popular apps including portable games, social networking and business apps being snapped up in their thousands.
Skymarket is being touted for an early 2009 release and would be the fourth major mobile marketplace along with the App Store, BlackBerry Marketplace and Google’s “Android Market” when it goes live.
