Sony Ericsson’s Walkman phones have always been about the music, man, but the new W760 slider shows there’s more to these muso blowers than just belting out tunes – it rocks up sporting a built-in GPS receiver.
This skater is the perfect upgrade to the street eagle W580 slider, arriving with a considerable feature hike to entice, including zippy HSDPA download speeds, a 3.2-megapixel snapper, and, lest we forget, sat nav skills.
The W760 is also better equipped for street life, with a reassuring solid torso and firm but springy slider action. Its compact frame also means it snugly nestles in the trouser pouch without a fear of bulging while, naturally, like all Sony Ericsson blowers, its child’s play to handle and use.
If the record books are noting, the W760 is the first Sony Ericsson handset to harbour GPS but unfortunately its inaugural performance using Google Maps was more old banger than sleek sports car. After straining to find a satellite fix from a cold start, it proceeding to have trouble keeping it locked when we hit more built-up Metropolis on foot.
GPS issues aside, the W760’s on-board Walkman music player sounds as dynamic as ever, although we’re still miffed that Sony Ericsson has yet to integrate a 3.5mm headphone jack and endangers your life with a an adapter and a tangle of strangulating wires. The 3.2-megapixel camera is also underwhelming with no autofocus and flash to strengthen its photo chops. That said it’s cool for outdoor point and shoot scenarios.
