Just as HSDPA, or 3.5G as it’s otherwise known, has established itself as the de facto mobile broadband technology, talk of bullet-speed 4G appearing on the horizon is sure to send any data addictions into overdrive.
The Likes of Nokia, Sony Ericsson and NEC got together recently for a big group hug to plan the development of Long Term Evolution (LTE) or 4G. This coalition is hoping 4G will take the baton from HSDPA and take mobile download speeds to a heavenly level. If you the consider that current HSDPA times peak at 3.2Mbps, then 4G’s possible eventual speeds of 1Gbps is like pitting a Ferrari against a Ford Focus.
But what about WiMax? This Intel-championed wireless tech is basically an evolution of Wi-Fi, but unlike the provincial Wi-Fi, has a signal range of between 2-3 miles. That said it too has support from big players such as Nokia. Only time will tell, which technology will reign, but it’s possible the two could live harmoniously side-by-side. However, don’t hold you breath for an imminent roll out.
