I know all about Nokia Maps, thanks – it’s been out for ages.
Wait a sec. I bet you haven’t the seen the brand new “2.0” version that’s just been launched.
2.0? So what’s new?
Now you’re interested! Well, the best new feature for our money is the pedestrian mode, which skips the likes of motorways to provide accurate directions along footpaths, bridleways and through shopping centres.
Handy. Anything else?
But of course. There are now hybrid satellite images to peruse, as well as live traffic information for those who prefer to use the regular, non-pedestrian mode – useful for staying well clear of those traffic trouble spots. There are loads more points of interest included, so you’ll have more of an idea what’s going on around on in terms of shops, restaurants, hotels and the like.
It’s been tweaked to make it much faster too, and it’ll find your location in a jiffy (under a minute to be specific) if you’ve got a GPS-equipped Nokia handset like the N95, N95 8GB or N82. No more twiddling your thumbs for ten minutes while your blower struggles to get a satellite fix.
Oh, you need GPS do you? That counts me out, my Nokia doesn’t have it…
Don’t fret – while Nokia Maps works much better on a GPS-equipped phone, it’s not a requirement. You can still run the app and use it to browse and search maps on the go.
Sounds good. How much then?
Not a jot, my good man. You can download it for nothing right now from Nokia Beta Labs, but do bear in mind that it’s still in beta form, so there may be one or two bugs hanging about. If you don’t want to risk any issues you can wait for the full release, which shouldn’t be too far off.
Do say: “Let’s check the route on my phone.”
Don’t say: “Get the road atlas out of the boot, love.
