RIM has revealed that it is currently in the process of designing a BlackBerry model able to connect to a super-fast HSDPA 3G network.
When asked by The Financial Times what his current mobile phone was, RIM president and CEO Mike Lazaridis answered: “One of our prototypes - a 3.5G BlackBerry. It’s very fast over third-generation networks that have HSDPA.”
A BlackBerry toting HSDPA capabilities would be able to surf the web and download files at broadband speeds, wherever the user was – the only way current BlackBerry models can get quick Internet access is via Wi-Fi, so users need to be within range of a wireless hotspot.
But not for much longer, it seems. While RIM hasn’t revealed any further details of the prototype, rumours suggest that a BlackBerry 9000 series is launching later this year, with models that will sport both HSDPA and Wi-Fi. We’ll keep you posted on further developments.
