“A classic case of the best getting better”
When we reviewed the 16GB iPod Touch back in October 2007, we had only one real complaint: with a maximum of 16GB in its locker, it was a wee bit stingy on the storage front. So what does Apple go and do, four months later? They drop a new version of the Touch, toting a capacious 32GB of space. Result!
Basically, the iPod Touch 32GB is a classic case of the best getting better. All the things that made the original Touch so mind-blowingly brilliant are still here – the slim cutting-edge looks, the lush 3.5-inch screen that automatically rotates when you tilt the unit, the amazing multi-touch interface that almost does away with physical buttons altogether, transforming the screen itself into the user interface. Then there’s the Wi-Fi connection that lets you browse the web, watch YouTube videos, plot your location in Google Maps and buy and download tracks directly from the iTunes Store.
So you get all that, only now there’s enough storage space to really go mad on the music, photos and videos front. There’s room for 7,000 songs, or 25,000 photos, or 40 hours of video – okay, so we’re still not in the realms of the iPod Classic, with its 160GB hard drive, but the Touch is such a stunning piece of genuinely useful design that it triumphs as the only option if you’re after a sliver of pioneering and hugely practical technology in your pocket.
Verdict
Apple has succeeded in banishing the iPod Touch’s one notable flaw, by doubling the storage to 32GB. Simply the best portable entertainment gadget around.
